COURSE DESCRIPTION
Rationale of the Programme
Because of the growth of the information age, information can be got from many sources at high speeds, in large amounts, and sometimes with contradicting and diverse effects. In Uganda, like in the rest of the world, the growth of the utility of mobile phones and Internet has led to an information explosion. Cultural boundaries are broken and it’s harder to keep secrets. What this information needs is a cadre of professionals that will put it into context and better use through better management and dissemination for the benefit of the communities. This programme, therefore, seeks to train high quality journalists to be able to exploit information resources.
Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to produce graduates who have the capacity to:
- Work in the print media by being able to write news stories and features, carry out interviews, design newspapers and magazines, etc.
- Work in the broadcast media by operating television cameras and audio recorders, moderate programmes among others.
- Produce professional photographs, documentaries and write photo captions captions.
- Build a good relationship between the organization and its publics, plan and organize events and write effective press releases.
- Carry out research and produce reports.
- Appreciate the basic arguments about the political and economic environment in which the media industry operates and how these impact on media and journalism output and practice
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to:
- Explain the history of broadcasting and television production in Uganda.
- To write news stories and features, carry out interviews, design newspapers and magazines, etc.
- Write and build a radio programme and take photographs.
- Classify newspapers and magazines.
- Explain photo Journalism in Uganda, its history and impact in communication.
- Identify the elements and components of public relations.
- Identify the types of television programmes
- Describe radio journalism and explain is role in communication
