Course Description

Cosmetology is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills of designing hair and general management of beauty of both women and men. It introduces students to the way and means of ensuring hair and body care and protection. It prepares them to become hair and beauty designers and skin care managers. It will enable them became hair, beauty and skin care specialists.

Programme Rationale

In the modern and globalized world, fashion rules. What is more, the rapid advance in technology means lifestyles are fast changing, and people now care a lot about image and looks generally. Thus, both men and women have developed great concern for their hair, body, skin and structure and mind a lot about image and derive self-esteem from the way they look and feel. To meet this need, many salons and saunas have been set up. Unfortunately, these are managed by people with limited or no knowledge, skills and experience in beauty management, endangering the lives of their clients and causing much frustration among them. Thus, there is a serious need for professional personnel to work in the salons and beauty industry as a whole. This need prompted Gi-IT to start a Diploma in Cosmetology to train students and provide them with knowledge and skills of salon management so that on completion of the programme, they can manage the salon business professionally and contribute to the happiness of society.

Programme Objectives

This course aims at:

i) Introducing the students to cosmetology principles.

ii) To provide students with knowledge and skills of salon management.

iii) To enable students appreciate the facts relating to the structure, growth and distribution of hair.

iv) To produce professionals who can competently handle professional hair cutting and barbering implements.

v) To expose students to the saloon practical procedures as well as cosmetic handling and care.

vi) To introduce students to the different hair designs and styles.

vii) To provide students with skills that will enable them analyse the clients’ hair and scalp conditions and provide relevant solutions

Programme Regulations

i) Entry Requirements

a) Students entry through A’ level must have at least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes in any subjects at advanced level of education and at least three credits at ordinary level in one sitting.

b) A Certificate from a recognized institution of higher learning (second class lower) and at least three credits at ordinary level in one sitting.
